STARK MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS |
TRAININGS
Trainings for volunteers will be offered throughout the year. Some trainings offer free CE’s and may be medically oriented. All trainings are open to all medical and non-medical volunteers. Unless noted otherwise, trainings are free of charge and count as MRC approved trainings. If you are interested in attending one of those listed below, please email Tim Gabrelcik at gabrelcikt@starkhealth.org or call 330-493-9904 x284. THIS LIST WILL BE UPDATED MONTHLY AS TRAININGS MAY BE ADDED
Introduction to the Medical Reserve Corps and Emergency Response (2 hours)
This is the required general overview of the MRC and emergency management in Stark County. All volunteers should attend this training first. This MRC 101 introductory will be offered at the Stark County Health Department, 3951 Convenient Circle NW, Canton, Ohio 44718
Are You Ready? (1 hour)
Are you ready? Is your family ready? How about your workplace? If you are a volunteer who may respond to a disaster, you will want your home and work to be prepared in case you are gone for long periods. This is a review of local hazards and response as well as personal preparedness. This one hour training is recommended for every volunteer, including the general public. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their lunch when this is offered as a “Lunch N Learn”. This gives volunteers a chance to meet the MRC Coordinator and to meet other volunteers!
Red Cross Trainings
The federal government is encouraging cross training of MRC volunteers in order to have a better response to local and national emergencies. The Red Cross is offering trainings to the MRC at no charge. It is recommended that volunteers attend Red Cross trainings in a specific order. Some of these may have nursing CE’s
Intro to Incident Command System (ICS) 100 (1 hour)
This training is highly recommended for all volunteers and is held at the Stark County Health Department. This one hour presentation reviews the ICS and how volunteers can be placed during an incident. Participants will receive a certificate through FEMA. You may also take this course online through FEMA (see below).
T2B2 (1 hour)
The Stark County Health Department will host these webcasts offered by the University of Albany- School of Public Health. On the 3rd Thursday of each month, the school hosts a one hour training with free CE’s, usually a preparedness or nursing topic. These webcasts will be broadcast at the Stark County Health Department.
MRC Teams
- VRC Team – A Volunteer Reception Center team is specifically trained to handle a large number of volunteers during an emergency. The VRC Team will be able to process, register, credential, badge and assign volunteers at a designated facility. Team members can be medical or non-medical.
- POD Team – A Points of Dispensing team is specifically trained to staff a mass vaccination clinic with public health staff. Many key positions are needed for a POD, which may operate 24/7. Both medical and non-medical volunteers are needed for a POD. Several PODs may be operating simultaneously during an emergency.
- ACS Team – Healthcare partners in Stark County may open an Alternative Care Site during an emergency. A Deployment Team is responsible for setting up and tearing down the ACS. An Operations Team of medical volunteers will be needed to work alongside healthcare facility staff during a disaster.
If you are interested in being trained for any of these teams, please contact Tim Gabrelcik at 330-493-9904, ext.284 or by email at gabrelcikt@starkhealth.org
Free Psychological First Aid (PFA) Training (PDF)
This online training addresses how volunteers can assist and interact with victims during a disaster. This is recommended for all volunteers and it offers free CE’s.
